Ms Marchetti says when personal leave runs out, employees can use annual leave. And the employer can’t refuse that request unless the refusal is “reasonable”.

“Then think about if you have any accrued long service leave,” she says, noting this is only relevant for employees who have been with an organisation for a longer amount of time.

Ms Marchetti explains entitlements around long service leave will vary from employer to employer, and if you’re not covered by an award or enterprise agreement, the entitlement will come under a state or territory long-service act.

Ms Marchetti also recommends investigating your rights as a parent or carer in regards to requesting flexible working arrangements, such as working from home when the kids are sick, and also COVID-related payments such as the federal emergency pandemic payment.
