Pregnancy Discrimination and Your Rights At Work: Victorian Law Week

If you or someone you know is pregnant, this is your opportunity to learn about your rights at work from JobWatch employment rights community legal centre, with a focus on pregnancy and breastfeeding discrimination, parental leave and more.

May 01, 2023

Federal and state anti-discrimination laws make it unlawful to discriminate against a person because of their pregnancy or breastfeeding status in the area of employment, which covers employees and independent contractors.

However, numerous cases of pregnancy discrimination are reported to JobWatch every week, and findings of a research study showed that of these people:

  • 50% experienced dismissal (including threatened dismissal) or redundancy following announcement of pregnancy
  • 45% experienced changes to their terms and conditions of employment which produced a detriment
  • 19% had employers who refused to accommodate requests for temporary changes to employment to address health and safety concerns

If you or someone you know is pregnant, this is your opportunity to learn about your rights at work from JobWatch employment rights community legal centre, with a focus on pregnancy and breastfeeding discrimination, parental leave and more.

This event is part of Victorian Law Week 2023 and Tasmanian Law Week 2023.
