JobWatch’s new Fact Sheet explains state and federal laws that protect employees and prospective employees from discrimination on the basis of an irrelevant criminal record or on the basis of a spent conviction, and is designed for national system employees in Victoria, Queensland and Tasmania.

JobWatch is proud to present a new Fact Sheet resource – Criminal Records, Spent Convictions and Employment.
The Spent Convictions Act 2021 (Vic) recently passed by Parliament represents a positive development in criminal justice reform and will protect the rights of Victorian workers by ensuring they are not disadvantaged by the disclosure of old, irrelevant and less serious offences.
This new legislation is expected to help protect people from the discrimination and stigma attached to most historical convictions, but other more serious convictions will remain on the record. The scheme will also make discrimination on the basis of a spent conviction unlawful.
